YA Illustrated Book Club
Want to start a book club that involves artistic creativity? Here's an idea from Bookhearted!
My amazing co-workers and I founded a gathering called YA Illustrated Book Club. The idea was born at an art department happy hour. After a few drinks we decided to start a book club. A book club where we drew pictures inspired by the book. Then we decided it should be all young adult fiction, so we could read the books quickly, and it would be amazing to relive the books of our youth, or discover the ones we missed out on.
The first book we read was A Wrinkle In Time. We all had a great time creating our artworks for the meet up. There was even a Wrinkle In Time themed bean cheese avacado dip. Crayons, glitter markers and paper were available for making more art at the event, where we consumed copious amounts of wine and grilled cheese sammies.
Our next book was Voyage of the Dawn Treader, equally great artwork, and there was a watermelon boat food art sculpture, complete with kiwi Reepicheep.
At the Indian in the Cupboard night we made poster board headdresses. For Island of the Blue Dolphins instead of a painting I made an illustrated board game out of construction paper. We used toys for game pieces, and awarded a dolphin crown to the winner.
At our Hatchet night we made coloring pages for a change.
Eventually the club wound down. There are plans to evolve into a BYOBC (Bring Your Own Book Club), But I LOVED our Illustrated book club when it was going stong. I still think it's a great idea for bookworms who want more creative exercises in their life. I also think it would be a fun for actual young adults, or as a school class project.
